Confidence

Confidence: the belief that they can figure it out.

Psychologists call it self-efficacy: a child's belief that their effort will get them there. It grows from one thing above all, doing something hard and finishing it. Every Pramaan lab ends with something finished.

  • Hard problems sized to be finishable
  • Breaking things is part of the plan
  • Every child presents, every week

Why confidence, and why now

Albert Bandura, the Stanford psychologist who defined self-efficacy, showed that its strongest source is mastery: succeeding at something you were not sure you could do. Praise does not build it. Finishing does.

Children with high self-efficacy take on harder problems, persist longer when things break, and recover faster from failure. Those are the people who end up leading teams and starting companies.

Exams reward getting it right the first time. Real work rewards getting it right eventually. Pramaan trains the second.

How a lab grows confidence

1

Hard, but finishable

Every problem is set just past what a child can already do, so finishing it means something.

2

Breaking is part of the plan

Builds are tested until they fail. Children learn to read a failure, fix it and try again.

3

Speaking up, every week

Every child presents their team's work, in front of the room, every session.

4

Demo day

At the end of the cohort they present to you, and graduate with a certificate and a holistic report.

Projects that grow it

Every project is interdisciplinary: one real problem, several subjects, one thing built at the end.

Build a bridge that holds

Paper, tape and a target load. Teams test, break and redesign until it holds, then explain why it held.

PhysicsMathsDesign

Design for a hotter planet

Work out how heat moves, then design and test a way to keep a room cooler without power.

ScienceGeographyEngineering

Pitch a product to a panel

Find a problem people would pay to solve, prototype the fix, price it, and pitch it to a panel of parents.

What you will notice at home

A child who says let me try before asking for help, who talks about what broke without shame, and who stands up to present on demo day.

We track confidence with Bandura's self-efficacy scales at the start, middle and end of every cohort.
